Wall safes are an excellent asset for any home. If you have valuables you want to keep hidden from prying eyes and wandering hands, then a wall safe is a great choice for you. However, installation can be a little bit tricky for those who have never done it before. That being said, a little know-how and some elbow grease and you’ll be well on your way to having it done. Here’s how to install a wall safe!
Choose A Location
Before purchasing your wall safe, you’ll need to decide where you want it. This will let you know which size to purchase to ensure a proper fit. It’s best to choose a wall that’s away from high traffic areas such as the kitchen, or bathroom. Wall safes are supposed to remain hidden after all. Consider placing your safe in the back of your closet, or in a laundry room. Even the garage is a good choice. Make sure you have adequate space as you’ll want to install the safe about 5ft off the ground for ease of access. Avoid choosing a location with electrical wiring or plumbing.
Gather Your Materials
After you select your location and have chosen the right safe, gather your materials. You will need:
- Safety goggles
- Level
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Power drill
- Stud finder
- Drywall saw
After you’ve gathered your materials it’s time to install your safe!
Install The Wall Safe
When installing your safe the first thing you’ll do is mark and cut your opening.
Use the stud finder to find the studs in your wall. Then use your level to draw a square on the wall matching the measurements of your safe. If the studs are too far apart you can fill in the extra space with wedges or blocks of wood. Use your drywall saw to cut out the opening. Be careful while cutting to avoid any wiring you didn’t know about. (Better safe than sorry) After you’ve made your cut, insert the safe into the hole and fasten it to the studs with wood screws. Afterward, make sure your safe is snug and doesn’t move at all. If it’s snug then begin cleaning up and you’re ready to keep your valuables safe!
