Owning a firearm is an excellent way to defend yourself while exercising your 2nd amendment right. However, understanding your state’s laws on firearms is important to help ensure you are legally possessing and utilizing your gun. Purchasing, carrying, and using firearms should only be done in accordance with your state laws. Now that Indiana has become a constitutional carry state, it’s important to understand what that means for you and your rights!
What is a permitless carry state?
Permitless carry states, also known as constitutional carry states, are states that allow gun owners 18 years and up to legally open or conceal carry a firearm in a public place without requiring proof of training or a background check. The state of Indiana became a permitless carry state on July 1st, 2022.
Despite being a constitutional carry state, certain individuals are prohibited from carrying. This includes:
- Convicted felons (state or federal level)
- Persons with a pending felony case
- Those who have fled the state to evade criminal charges
- Aliens
- A person convicted of domestic violence, domestic battery, or criminal stalking
- Those restrained by protective orders
- Individuals dishonorably discharged from the military or National Guard
- Anyone who renounces their U.S. citizenship
- Those under the age of 18
If you are unsure whether one of these restrictions applies to you, contact local law enforcement or consult with legal counsel before choosing to carry a firearm.

Do you still need a handgun permit in Indiana?
Although qualified individuals no longer need a handgun permit to carry within the state of Indiana, you can still obtain one through the Indiana State Police. The primary benefit of obtaining a permit is for those who wish to carry across state lines. Those who regularly cross state borders for work or residents who live close to the state border may wish to apply for a permit so that if they cross into another state, even accidentally, they are doing so legally.
